Coming Up! February 11 to 15, 2013

MONDAY: Blizzard of ‘13
As Connecticut continues to dig out from the record-setting snowfall, we check-in with reporters, local officials and you. How have the cleanup efforts been where you live? Have the plows come by or are they all stuck in your town?

TUESDAY: Being Lincoln
Many are calling Daniel Day-Lewis’ portrayal of President Abraham Lincoln as one of the best. Lincoln, the movie, is up for 12 Academy Awards, including Best Actor. But weeks before the ceremony later this month, a U.S. congressman is asking the studio to alter an inaccuracy that pits Connecticut on the wrong side of the slavery debate. Today, on Lincoln’s 203rd birthday, we’ll be talking to several scholars, including one credited on the film as well as professional Lincoln impersonators. What does it take to become Lincoln? How does one portray one of the most immortalized figures in U.S. history? And can a portrayal ever be accurate?

WEDNESDAY: Silver Tsunami
Hartford is one of the “oldest” cities, in one of the “oldest” states in the nation, and we’re getting older. Today, we’ll dive into the silver tsunami of retiring baby boomers who over the next two decades will flood Connecticut’s population of those over 65 to almost 70 million. They could account for almost 40% of Connecticut’s population in 2030. The Connecticut Commission on Aging recently co-sponsored a forum with the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities to explore the best way to prepare our communities to meet the social, economic, housing, and transportation needs of aging boomers who want to stay in their homes and remain part of diverse communities, rejecting the assisted living and long-term care facilities of the past.

 THURSDAY: Tech Reporting
With the rise of modern computing and technology has come a rise of technology news outlets. How do tech journalists ethically cover the industry that also sends them plenty of gadgets to test out for free? We’ll be joined by David Brancaccio who hosts the Marketplace Tech Report, heard weekday mornings on WNPR. We want to hear from you…which outlets do you go to for tech news?

FRIDAY: Governor Dannel Malloy and UConn President Susan Herbst
Last Friday, Governor Malloy was back in the Emergency Operations Center for the blizzard. This Friday, he joins us in-studio for his monthly check-in. We’ll discuss the storm response as well as the state budget. We’ll also be joined by UConn President Susan Herbst to talk about the future of the state’s flagship university, which has its own budget uncertainties.

For Gov. Malloy. I’m probably one of the few leaning in favor of his wishing to do away with the Car tax to a point. I hail from Upstate NY and the difference in tax structure and taxes in general was shocking to me. I’m curious his goal in this move. Also what about gas taxes. Do we have a chance in relief at the pump? A $.30 hike in less than 2 weeks is staggering. I’m tempted to get a horse! I’ve been in CT nearly 10 yrs now and I find it a rather expensive state to live. Thank You
